Toronto Employers Paying More for Employee Mileage
TORONTO, Sept. 30 /CNW/ - A survey by the Toronto Board of Trade finds
that nearly two-thirds of Toronto employers either have increased, or are
considering increasing, the rates they pay for employee mileage expenses.
"The average is now in the 35 - 45 cent per kilometre range, with some
three-quarters of companies surveyed falling within those limits," explains
Board President Glen Grunwald, "It could well be that the increasing cost of
gasoline has been putting more pressure on companies to get their compensation
into that average range."
Most of the adjustments have not been huge. The vast majority,
94 per cent, of those companies that have increased their mileage compensation
rates have done so by less than ten cents per kilometre.
While just 23 per cent of the companies surveyed have actually adjusted
their rates, another 40 per cent say adjustments are now being considered.
Only 37 per cent of employers in the survey said they would not be changing
their mileage compensation.
The survey of more than 1,100 companies was conducted from September
16 - 23 by the Board's HR Surveys and Programs department, which has also just
released its 2005 Compensation and Benefits Survey Series.
