Robert A. Jones Selected as Acting Labor Commissioner

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -Dec. 19, 2005--The California Labor and Workforce Development Agency (LWDA) today announced the appointment of Robert A. Jones, chief counsel for the California Department of Industrial Relations' Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE), to the position of acting labor commissioner, until a permanent appointment is found. Jones will continue as chief counsel for the Division while assuming the additional duties.

"I am very pleased that Bob has agreed to take on these important responsibilities. His commitment to professionalism and keen understanding of labor law and enforcement will be crucial in continuing to guide the division toward accomplishment of its many missions," said Victoria Bradshaw, secretary of Labor and Workforce Development Agency, which oversees the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) and its divisions, including DLSE.

"Bob Jones has proven his ability to work with all components of the Department," said DIR Director John Rea. "He is well respected among the staff and his colleagues and is a most welcome addition to DIR's executive team."

In his new position as acting labor commissioner, Jones will be responsible for overseeing all of DLSE's programs and activities. DLSE adjudicates wage claims, investigates discrimination and public works complaints and enforces labor law and the Industrial Welfare Commission wage orders. In addition, DLSE is the lead agency in the Economic and Employment Enforcement Coalition (EEEC), a coalition of various state, local and federal agencies which combines resources to vigorously enforce labor laws within industries that have a high concentration of vulnerable workers and a history of non-compliance.
